What is the Law of Attraction?

The idea behind the Law of Attraction is a very simple one: you create your own reality. Wherever you choose to focus your attention, this is what will be amplified or attracted into your life. This isn’t as easy as simply having your wishes come true, or everyone would have what they wanted. For example, if you think you “need more money” and focus on this, you won’t bring money into your life - instead you will increase your need for money.

Why It Works

Depending on who you ask, there can be a number of explanations for how the Law of Attraction works, but there are two main theories:

The spiritual explanation – this theory encompasses beliefs of God and the Universe, and how our personal energy aligns with these forces. By directing our energy towards the gratitude for positive things in our lives, rather than focusing on our problems, we can invite more positive energy into our lives.

The traditionally scientific explanation – for those that don’t feel comfortable with spirituality or abstract explanations, this one might be easier to understand. This theory explains that the Law of Attraction is a way of shifting your mindset. When we focus on a new reality, we tend to be more open to possibilities, notice opportunities, and even take more risks. All of these factors can allow us to achieve the things that we are hoping for.

Proof That the Law of Attraction Works

Whether you subscribe to the spiritual explanation or the scientific one, there is plenty of anecdotal evidence to support the fact that the Law of Attraction does work not only to get you what you want but to improve your life generally. Scientific research has proven that optimistic people are not only happier but have greater success in life and enjoy better health. Psychologists find that changing your self-talk can lift you out of a vicious circle of negativity.

The Important Caveats

When presented with the Law of Attraction, it might be easy to think that whatever you believe can bring you the good things you long for into your life.  But it’s important to understand that it’s not the belief or the wishing that can change people’s situation – it’s the actions that follow that will bring you your desires. Even scientific studies have shown that, while optimists do enjoy happier lives, it is because of the actions they take to achieve this, not simply because of their positive mindset. It’s also very important to understand that negative events outside your control are not the result of any negative thoughts on your part. Illnesses, accidents, or world events are not your fault. These things are beyond our control – all we can do is choose how to deal with them.
